One word: bridges. While WI may not have a bridge problem (and that's a big may... flooding can cause bridge damage), many East Coast states have a serious bridge problem. As in they are known to be in worse shape than I-35 in Minneapolis was. And since many of those bridges are on US Routes, which are legal bike routes... it affects bike riders just as much as car drivers. Out west, the issues tend to be on interstates, but there it is legal for cyclists to use the interstates.

Roads need maintenance. If they don't get it, sooner or later, they're not roads anymore. To do the maintenance, we need taxes. And for decades we've not been spending enough on basic maintenance. So yeah, we kind of *do* need to make up the shortfall.

And federal funding isn't just for interstates. In some situations, it can be used for local streets. Dunno about you, but I'd love to see Washington get some repairs...
