While out on a group ride last night, heading west through Belleville on 69/92 by the high school, a red early 2000 Ford Explorer brushed our group of 6 riders and purposely swerved into the bike lane, just ahead of us. Fortunately no one was hit and no one crashed. The coward then sped off heading west towards New Glarus.
The encouraging news is that right after this happened, a police car was traveling the opposite direction. We waved the officer down, and pointed towards the red Explorer. The office immediately pulled to the side of the road, turned on his lights and waited for us. One rider in our group reported what happened and the officer turned around and chased down the Explorer with lights flashing - no hesitation and no questions asked. I did not notice the name on the police car, but I am assuming it was the city of Belleville police. Thanks are in order for the officer, it is nice to know that some are looking out for cyclists. I'll be getting in touch with the department to express the gratitude of our group, and thought I should share the experience with the bikies and try to offset some of the not so encouraging news we've heard lately.
