News reports say the driver ran the red light at the Broom St. intersection.
It was not exactly a great "Welcome to Madison" for the recently-arrived German
student who was hit and hospitalized...

That same evening, a red Cherokee-type vehicle blatantly ran the west-bound red
light along Monroe St., at Regent, as a couple cyclists and a jogger were
already in the crosswalk with the "Walk" light on.

These and countless similar episodes highlight the overwhelming need for
intersection cameras, and obtaining their installation and use should be a top
priority for a local bike-ped advocacy group.

As part of a stream restoration impact study I did some years ago that
included a proposed commuter path in Racine County, I learned that traffic
crashes in that county cost at least $3.4 million per month in health care,
lost work time, enforcement, and other costs that few people seem to consider.
An array of such cameras across the city will pay for themselves in a VERY
short time.

Subject: [Bikies] Bicyclist hit by truck at John Nolen & Broom Street -- any
information?

This evening around 8 pm. I was riding on the bike path in Law Park, and came
across a large number of emergency vehicles blocking the roadway near Broom St.
I was told that a woman had been crossing the street on her bicycle when a
truck came through the crosswalk and hit her, sending her 25 feet in the air.
After hitting her, the truck drove off.

Does anybody on bikies know anything about this incident, beyond what I heard
at the scene? Is the bicyclist likely to be OK? Is there any hope of finding
the trucker (I'm told that some of the witnesses saw the license plate -- I
hope so)? So far, there nothing on the news about this crash.
