If you have ever been to Portland, Eugene, Bellevue, WA, (across the lake from
Seattle) Kirkland, WA (next door to Bellevue), you would have been as astounded
as I was that cars actually stop for pedestrians, ALWAYS. My family tells me
that the police routinely ticket any motorist who doesn't stop when a
pedestrian is at a crosswalk so the culture has adapted and accepts as normal
the need to yield. My experience on a bicycle in Portland and Eugene was
similar.

I am in a wheelchair and today a UW transport van wasn't going stop while I
was crossing in a crosswalk by the Nat and on Friday last week a metro bus
didn't stop while I was attempting to cross. I had to stop in the middle of the
crosswalk and wait for the bus. The driver didn't even slow down. I backed up
in my wheelchair and was worried that traffic from the other side would start
going...
I am not sure of a baseball bat but I would love video or phone camera that
could be uploaded quickly to the police dept.

Not so fast. Neither you nor I were at the pedestrian stings. I would
expect that a "cross-walk" person must be totally out of the crosswalk--not
just out of the line of traffic. And the sting might have been conducted on
that basis.--------So, wait for the sting about bicycles stopping on empty
streets with stop signs---empty of anything--but a hiding police person. Would
you then claim there should be baseball bats for hitting bicycles?

"So far this year, the TEST unit has issued 95 citations to drivers for
failing to yield to a pedestrian, most resulting from enforcement operations,
Tripke said."
Just 95 this year? I bet they could get 95 in a single day!
At the risk of sounding extremist, I will reiterate my suggestion that we
replace those 'red flags' at intersections with baseball bats.
