What does "privatization" have to do with a government license tax for Madison.  Then one would know just how large the bicycle use contingent actually is.  Aren't there hunting fees, State park camping fees,  all sorts of user fees.  In your book Matt, are those privatizations?  Is the auto licensing for both drivers and vehicles--privatization by "fiscal conservatives?"

Again, possibly a hostile attitude has been detected at times by cyclists of  motorists who feel they are the only people paying.  Most, in fact travel to work by their automobiles on the roads where they then pay taxes.  Isn't that the excuse for every child to receive a "state school subsidy--k12" of roughly $120,000. a head?  That is--that somehow they become productive and add that much value?  Some stretch of reasoning, I know.

When the amount of public subsidy for bicycling infrastructure + human-scaled accessibility exceeds the subsidy for roads over the last 75 years, then we will be at what I consider parity.  Unfortunately, congress has been using general tax revenues to keep the highway trust fund afloat over the last few years.   Based on my recollection, there was $16bil redirected last year, and they are planning on $21bil next year – so we are still going backwards in terms of parity.  This is in addition to the billions out of the stimulus package for roads.  And then there is a problem of local roads largely being funding by local taxes.  Oh, and then there’s the auto-company bailout we could toss into the parity equation.

It is always a mystery to me why the so-called fiscal conservatives don’t start their privatization of transportation with roads – it is where the largest immediate impact to the size of government can be made.

But my only point was the lack of parity of the car tab and the city bike path tab.
