Just speaking for the one guy that triggered my rant, he was riding 15-20 mph
on a long stretch of sidewalk where he had ample opportunities to move out into
a wide and open road. And it appears this is his normal mode.
I don't think anyone minds us riding the sidewalk (slowly) up to say, a block,
especially to get around construction or get to an intersection against
traffic. When I do that I take pains to let pedestrians know that it's their
sidewalk, I'm just borrowing it for a minute.

Subject: Re: [Bikies] I met THAT guy
Not that any Bikies ever participate in obnoxious behavior, but isn't this ...
"One tactic I use for fun when I see an adult biker coming down the sidewalk is
to wander
aimlessly on the sidewalk and make it appear that I do not see him/her. I say
nothing and
they come to a very slow crawl."
... kind of obnoxious? Riding on a sidewalk is not illegal in many parts of
Madison, and if someone is riding at "reasonable for sidewalk" speed (I would
say about as fast as a jogger might run, say 7 mph), why shouldn't they be
there? (Okay, that was rhetorical, I'm sure people can think of several
reasons.)
I once got yelled at by a guy for *walking* my recumbent (I was sitting down on
it, it's hard to walk it standing up) at less than 4 mph on a sidewalk. The guy
had two bike tires draped over his shoulders and clearly thought he was God's
educator to the idiot cyclist masses. Fortunately, I don't remember what he
looked like, so if it was one of you, I'm none the wiser
should I ever meet you.
To get home from work every day, there is a 30 yard stretch I take on a
sidewalk where it is legal to ride (the other options are cycling the wrong way
down the road, cycling on Whitney Way (the no-shoulder portion), or adding two
miles to my commute. I ride at 7 mph or slower and, if there are pedestrians on
it, I get out of their way. If they are ahead of me and don't see me, I stay
behind them at their pace or, if they are just standing there, say, "Hi there"
and ask to pass them.
Occasionally I've been sworn at anyway, but I figure those folks are really
meaning to swear at the people who've come by them at 20 mph with no warning,
not me.
