I take basically the same path as Mitchell outlines, but usually just go up Old Sauk hill. But during the winter when there is snow filling that bike lane, sharing the lane with traffic can be a bit intimidating. So if the bike lane is still full of snow and ice, I would definitely go Stonefield Rd. If you do not like to ride on Gammon, you can cross Gammon, then the road becomes Longmeadow. After about a block and a half, turn left on the path through the park and then take Westfield Rd to Old Sauk. The Madison Bicycle Map shows this route. Be aware that part of Old Middleton Road is supposed to be reconstructed soon, so you may need to go up Old Sauk Hill anyway. Thanks, John Rider

I could take University and Old Sauk most of the way, but I've heard that there are backstreet routes that avoid some of the hills and fast-moving auto traffic on Old Sauk.
