Some bikies may remember the discussion on this list of a Toronto motorist that, according to eyewitnesses and surveillance photos, used his luxury convertible to kill a bicyclist by scraping him off on a fire hydrant in a late night, high-speed, wrong-side-of-road spree back in August 2009. Turns out that the perpetrator was a highly-placed Ontario politician-- former provincial AG, in fact-- named Michael Bryant.

All Canada watched to see how, or if, justice would be served.

Here's how that played out:

1. The perpetrator was quickly released.

2. Multiple stories in media outlets attacked the character of the victim.

3. Repeated postponements in brief court proceedings at which the perpetrator was not even required to appear.

4. A Vancouver lawyer was brought in to privately perform an investigation.

5. Earlier this week, all charges were dropped.

What we didn't have was a public trial at which the evidence was held up to the light of day-- instead, we had the judgement of one man hand-picked by the political establishment.

Here is a link to a Globe and Mail editorial with the unlikely headline "A Good Day for Justice": http://is.gd/crGdR The tagline is "The poisoned arrow of wrongful accusation no longer points at an innocent man." to which I would add "the newspaper of shame is no longer delivered to my doorstep or used to wrap my fish." I have to caution you: don't read it if you don't have a taste for moral outrage. For example, the fact that Bryant was driving a convertible with the top down is sited as mitigating justification for the murder.

Here's a link to an article at a different newspaper that covers some of the details:

but also follows the line "the cyclist was a madman so it was okay to kill him."
