I looked at the Ped/Bike agenda for this coming Tuesday and it's pretty sparse:
http://legistar.cityofmadison.com/meetings/2010/6/8626_A_PEDESTRIAN_BICYCLE_MOTOR_VEHICLE_COMMISSION_10-06-22_Agenda.pdf ==== C.7. Approving Mifflin Street bike boulevard traffic control at Webster & Mifflin and Blair & Mifflin ==== No links to any docs or further explanations... >From the link Brenda posted, it sounds like a HAWK signal being at Blair/Mifflin and a full signal (all 4 directions?) at Webster/Mifflin? However, the meeting agenda isn't clear on this. And I don't know who the "we" are in Brenda's link's quoted text. (If you google HAWK signal you can find videos and picture--it's not that different from the signal at East Campus Mall on Johnson Street, except it doesn't have a green light, it's a bit fancier in blinking yellow and red at cars to indicate subleties of the signal's cycle, and it only activates when a ped presses a button.) As someone whose residential bicycle and automobile parking are both on the 100 block of E. Mifflin, it would be nice to know what exactly is being proposed--it's hard to sign up for public comments on something that is unknown. A signal at Webster/Mifflin would make getting out on high-traffic days easier, given the poor visibility up the hill on Webster, and would hopefully reduce the aggressiveness (honking, not stopping when other lanes have stopped for a ped) that I see from drivers at the crosswalks on Saturdays during the farmer's market. I'm still curious how the (proposed? about to be built??) contraflow lane in 100 E Mifflin will work, given the presence of driveways and sidewalk cafes in that block, but I agree it's a critical connection to get to/from the square.
