The Platinum Bicycling Committee Report recommended wayfaring signs.
* Page 26. "Convert current bike route network and signage to a
destination-based
network."
* "Details. Signs will indicated where a bicyclist can get to and the
distance. Examples
exist in Chicago and Portland.. May include the naming of some routes and
the signage
may be phased in."
* "Timeline. Plans to begin no later than Spring 2009."
As far I know nothing has happened. I recommended that it be done in two
phases. First -
the bike paths and connecting street segments and then for phase two the
remaining street
system. East Wilson and the "Isthmus" Path would be in phase one.
I further recommended that a consultant be hired to expedite phase one. I
doubted that staff
would or could find time. It would require much public involvement to
determine things such
as destinations.
However, destinations to specific private businesses as noted below are
problematic.
Perhaps with review by the city attorney businesses could contract (at a cost)
to have their
business name put on signs at certain intersections on the path and East
Wilson. A similar
example is on the Interstate where businesses contract to put their names on a
Specific
Information Sign (SIS). There is also another program that allows business
directional signs
on other state highways - at a cost to the business owner. One of these, as a
city run
program, might work for Willy Street.
Now back to the Platinum "Destination-based Network Signing" - it needs to
happen ASAP.
The time frames for many recommendations in the Report have slipped drastically.

These signs would be especially useful during the Willy St reconstruction. Can
someone
pass this suggestion along to the "Willy Lives" campaign?
Regardless, for people using the pathto parallel Willy, it would be VERY
handy for
occasional visitors like me to have signsalong the path, at each
cross-street
intersection,that list the businesses on each half-block in each direction
from the
cross-street, so cyclists can minimize the distance they need to travel on
Willy -
by turning onto the cross-street that is nearest their destination.
