Plus my usual adroitness with a new pump means I'd flatten 4 car tires to get
my tire up to 60 psi.

As someone already mentioned, you're never going to get your bike tires up to
60psi by connecting that thing to typical car tires. The tires on my car
require somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-45psi (I forget exactly), but
certainly not 60psi.

Besides, I don't really get it. sure, it's an interesting exercise to hack,
and the small parts probably only cost a few dollars.

But what is so expensive or difficult about a purpose built pump you carry
with you (that's probably no heavier or bulkier than the hack) and only costs
$15?
