Dear David, At least I don't live on the street you describe and I have not driven to Madison in a decade. But if I did and had to commute with such jack rabbit pedestrian and bike controlled lights, I would simply drive at a speed for convenient stopping, not putting any extra strain to my car or brakes. When I drive a forty mile per hour road with uncontrolled lights, I drive at fifteen or twenty and don't mind the obscene gestures or squealing tires as cars race around me. If those are the new rules of the game--uncontrolled stoplights--so-be-it, and if I am then a menace--so be it. When I lived in DC there was a four lane urban steep downgrade with a light-controlled cross street at the bottom. I descended that hill in rush hour in a lower gear rather than depend on breaks after otherwise going down pell-mell. You can imagine the obscene gestures sent my way. Maybe your Scott Walker is as sensible a driver as I?

The new hawk signal is now operational at the corner of E. Mifflin and Blair Streets. It feels great to push the button and get an immediate response. I'm going to call it the Scott Walker memorial signal cause he is going to blow a blood vessel the first time he is stopped on his way home.
