I have to admit, the non-plowing of University Ave counterflow lane - long,
long before I ever became a bike advocate or most of the paths were built -
was one of my first gripes to the City. My first taste of public
involvement, and you see where that led.

Although it is most definitely out of the way if you destination is on
University Ave, I have always preferred to ride Dayton, especially
eastbound. Even if the bike lanes are not clean, you can ride with the rest
of the traffic on clear pavement long before the counterflow lane will ever
be clear.

Even if the counterflow lane is plowed, the shadow cast by the buildings
keeps the snow/ice from melting on average winter days, and the adjacent
property owners - whether the UW, private business, or other - tend to push
the snow from the sidewalk back into the bike lane.

Besides, even in good weather, the traffic come at me westbound - and
possibly turning - makes me alternately dizzy and wary.
