Another area of improvement is the stop sign bike lane transition through the
area behind the old Borders. The sign at the intersection of Locust and Rose
Place should be a "bikes right turn yield" instead, for westbound bikes. The
sign at the intersection of Locust, Burbank Place and the bike path should be
switched so that cars headed eastbound on Locust out of the parking lot and
cars headed north on Burbank have to stop. The is so little car traffic through
there and quite a bit of bike traffic, why make the cyclists stop when they are
the majority of the traffic through there? It's in the interest of safety, too.
I can tell you that 99.99999% of cyclists headed east off the path onto Locust
don't stop there. They just fly right on through without looking. The few cars
that exit that parking lot assume (correctly) they have the right of way and
(thanks to some strategically placed flora and the positioning of the the path)
can't see if there is a
cyclist approaching. One of these days someone is going to get smacked there.
Make the cars stop, solve the problem.

The one area that I know many people will wonder about is the transition from
the Campus Dr path to ??? going west.

The parking lot directly across U Bay Dr is private property, and the owner
gets very nervous about liability when people ride through that lot. She has
put up a sign saying "NO BIKES. Don't come through here!" [rough translation]

Village of Shorewood Hills (VSH) knows this is a major problem, and has a long
term plan to make the transition better and safer. At a campus meeting earlier
this week, Karl Frantz said that there is a preliminary proposal to redevelop
the area just north of that parking lot, but the parking lot is a separate
parcel. VSH is committed to improving the situation, but it may be awhile.

I'm really glad that Chuck is working with VSH, because, as a small
municipality, they don't have a staff to do bicycle-specific planning. I have
worked with them a bit, but Chuck is a much better person to fulfill this role.

The other area that needs to be fixed - and VSH is aware of this - is the area
around the pool. They are trying to get an agreement from the RR to be able to
put a path between the pool and rail.

Sometimes things move slowly, but they do move. And that's good.
