I don't spend a lot of time in that area, but my impression is that the
development that is already in that area consists of warehouses and industrial
uses that need cheap land, and aren't really good neighbors to residential
neighborhoods.  I don't think there's much hope of getting businesses like that
to site on the Isthmus, and I don't think we want them there.

If the area develops with more businesses like that, it might attract housing
for people who work in those businesses, so they can avoid that 20-mile
commute, and they will need bicycle infrastructure.  I think we would also need
safe commuting routes for people who live on the North Side or the East Side
and work at businesses in that area.

Hopefully Robbie is wrong that this area of the city will be fully built out in
well less than 50 years.  Despite the land for sale signs, nothing has been
built along Portage Road.  Every day more and more people begin to understand
the unsustainability of building in the exurbs, the reality of global warming,
and the reality of peak oil.  At some point the people who get it will
outnumber the people who don't, and they will gradually occupy decision-making
positions in government and real estate.  Who's going to want to make a 20-mile
commute each day when gasoline is $10/gallon or more?

the expectation. It is unreasonable to expect pedestrians to twice cross what
will be a major arterial if they are starting and ending their trip on the same
side of Hoepker.
