The detail regarding the overnight storm on this tour shined a very
bright light on why there were so many flats. Every tour I've ever been
on - regardless of whether bikers were on chip seal or regular roads -
flats increased. Wet tires retain bits of road stuff, thorns, etc and
cause flats. I don't work for the city or road builders, but... It's
too easy to point a bony finger at some other entity to blame for an
inconvenience like a flat on a ride... but the fact remains that after
heavy rains, crap washes up off roadways and stick to wet tires and they
are prone to flatting.
Also, the fancy race bikes that so many people spend thousands on
routinely use 23MM (or smaller) foldable, super light tires which are
paper thin. I used to ride a bike with tires like this and I'd have
flat every 50-100 miles on clean dry pavement. Riding on wider heavier,
flat resistant tires is an easy compromise for me to make to keep the
ride rolling.
I enjoyed reading about the great numbers of riders who pitched in to
get flat repaired and the ride going again.
