Perhaps the police report offers answers to these questions:

1. Was the bicyclist wearing a helmet?

2. Was the bicycle equipped with a front light (so the taxi driver
could have a chance of seeing the on-coming bicyclist)?

3. Was anyone distracted or impaired (taxi driver or bicyclist)?

Knowing the answers may offer educational opportunities. As a bicyclist I
only imagine avoiding a collision in a case like this when the parallel
parking/reversing motor vehicle is far enough away to give me a safe
stopping distance. Extremely bad luck to be so close to not allow that.

A 21-year-old Madison man is in critical condition after crashing his

night.

The unidentified bicyclist suffered serious head injuries in the crash
reported at 9:25 p.m. in the 10 block of Broom Street, according to a news
release from the Madison Police Department.

The 26-year-old driver of the Madison Taxi minivan told police he was slowly
backing up into a legal parking space on North Broom Street when the bike
crashed into the rear of the minivan.

"The driver of the taxi immediately rendered aid to the bicyclist," said
police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

The crash remains under investigation. No citations were issued.
