Bicyclist hit by semi suffers life-threatening head injuries

  State Journal

A 23-year-old Madison man suffered life-threatening head injuries Tuesday after
he was struck by a semitrailer while riding a bicycle in Fitchburg, police said.

The crash occurred at about 1:45 p.m. at the intersection of Verona Road and
Williamsburg Way.

Police said the bicyclist was wearing a helmet.

Lt. Todd Stetzer said the bicyclist was crossing Verona Road when the driver of
a semitrailer headed south failed to obey a traffic signal and struck him.

The man was taken by ambulance to UW Hospital, where he was in critical
condition, Stetzer said.

Stetzer said that no traffic citation had been issued and that the State Patrol
was assisting with the crash investigation.

"It's still under investigation as to whether (the light) was red or yellow,"
he said. "That's what we were trying to gather from witnesses, but either way
you have to stop."

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Fitchburg police at 270-4300.

Stetzer said the intersection had been a problem in the past, but was
redesigned several years ago to make it safer for motorists. He also noted that
the Capital City Trail bike path tunnels under Verona Road only a few hundred
feet from the crash scene.

The crash caused major traffic delays throughout the afternoon.
