I think some changes can be made, since some have been made since the final EIS came out.
An example pertains to the pedestrian overpass. I was surprised to see that the entrance to it was going to be about a block west of where it is now - Whenona Drive. To me this seemed ridiculous since who wants to walk a block west to get on the overpass, then a block back east to cross over. If you are on foot, especially, why would you even use the overpass at all when you could walk another block west and cross under the Beltline to get more directly where you were going? I made some arguments about how that might also cause middle school students going to Cherokee to avoid it completely. I suggested that WisDOT ought to at least provide a way to get onto the overpass from Whenona. At the information session, I noticed that their displays showed entrances from both Whenona and the western entrance they had shown before. I¹m sure these changes were made because of comments made by my neighborhood association (Dunn¹s Marsh) and me. After the info session at Fitchburg, I have a number of things to ask. I plan to ask those questions and make suggestions because I think there¹s still a chance for some changes. Regarding a route over the Beltline while the ped/bike overpass is out, I think they said they would have Seminole Highway open so there would be a route for bikes. They said there would be a month between demolition of the present bike/ped overpass and opening of the new one. I think this will happen in 2014. Regarding the coming increase of traffic on Seminole Highway, one of my neighbors suggested that the lines be redrawn on Seminole to make the bike lanes wider and the traffic lanes narrower so that motorists get the idea that Seminole is a local road, not a raceway for cars. On the response sheet, I suggested that caution lights would be a good idea at bike crossings of Seminole Highway, specifically where the Cannonball and the Capitol City Trails cross.
