I have been commuting with a laptop or netbook computer in a pannier for
almost ten years, and have never had trouble with the computer. Of course,
I haven't crashed with it either. I used to be much more paranoid about the
computer, but now think that portable computing devices - laptops,
notebooks, netbooks, and tablets - have gotten much tougher. The computer
probably gets rougher treatment when it is off the bike than when it's on.
