Quoting tim wong <[email protected]>:

I was not talking about crime. Asking people--pedestrians and
bicyclists--to put their lives at risk (yes, there have been fatal
bike on bike crashes in Madison) because some selfish neighbors want
to pretend they live in the country by having no lights past their
backyard (although there are lights in their front yard) is a little
much. I simply do not understand why there is even any debate about
the need for lights.

As Tim points out, this is not about reducing crime. City staff have been explicit on this point. The purpose of the lighting is to reduce crashes.

If we're going to embrace a 'dark sky' for this neighborhood, then let's do it right: turn off all the street lights in that area. A show of hands?
