agree, great move...in our hood, when Old University (is there a NEW University
somewhere?) was changed from 4 to 2 w/bike lanes and turn lanes there was a
little opposition, mainly resistance to change...but in the end its worked out
very well...some blockage issues near bus stops and cars not ceding right of
way to pedestrians in marked crosswalks....but all in all a great
improvement...and Sherman has already shown, even at the choke point up by
warner park, that the 2 lane can work....and with fordem linking in as a 2 lane
road it would make sense...the potential for streetscape improvements would
also help, plus as Mary mentions..its much more comfortable for neighborhood
pedestrian and retail success...good luck!

Subject: Re: [Bikies] Fw: A New Look for Sherman Ave
I am super happy that there is a renewed push for bike lanes on Sherman and
welcome the chance to counter any naysayers on this effort. This is a great
part of the city that is often not appreciated, Part of why we did not look for
a house near Sherman when we moved back to Madison was the utter failure to
accommodate bikes and peds in this corridor.
Also let's try to not shift the speedsters and push the negative impacts to
other streets - we should support managing speed on this road. There are
houses, businesses, a park and a dog park along Packers. Madison B-Cycle's
offices are also on Packers.

>>In short, the City’s Traffic Engineering Division is recommending improvements
to decrease vehicle speed and to make it safer for pedestrians and bicycles on
N. Sherman Ave. The report recommends two main changes to the street. First, to
reconfigure the
street cross-section between Trailsway and Fordem (pending cooperation from the
Village of Maple Bluff) from the existing four lane street to a two lane street
with a center left turn lane and bike lanes, and second, to install
pedestrian refuge islands at five high pedestrian crossing locations along the
project corridor.
