It’s not just the crosswalks that fail as safe havens in NYC.

Many pedestrians have been killed or injured recently on the SIDEWALKS there.

The drivers responsible are consistently walking away from the lethal
consequences of their behavior with no penalties at all imposed by the NYPD,
who often say simply “no criminality involved”

Apparently, if you haven’t been drinking when you drive so negligently in NYC
that you kill or brain-injure people ON THE SIDEWALK, that’S OK with NYPD.

And, yes, I am painfully aware that at least one driver with multiple OWIs
and license suspensions killed a cyclist in Dane County in the last decade
and was found not guilty of homicide by the negligent use of a motor vehicle,
but at least we prosecuted that person. It was the jury that decided the
driver was innocent, not our law enforcement or our prosecutors.

Subject: [Bikies] Crosswalks in New York Are Not Havens, Study Finds

This NYT article reports on the results of a study of pedestrian and
bicyclist injuries treated at a particular NYC hospital, with the perhaps
unsurprising lede

Pedestrians struck by cars are most often hit while in the crosswalk, with
the signal on their side.

One of the more interesting results- arguably flying in the face of Mayor
Bloomberg's jihad against Big Soda- is that fat folk fare favourably in
collisions- it's all physics, baby. They also look at a raft of victim
behaviours, such as use of electronic devices, alcohol, and time of day.
Taxicabs and food delivery services are the apparent natural enemies of
cyclists.

A chilling limitation of the dataset: those who died at the scene weren't
treated and therefore weren't counted.
