John, I should have been more clear that it's the *title* of the promotion,
"Bacon on the Bike Trail", that's the issue.  You are right that we should not
be judgmental about people's food choices.

The sponsor could offer free smokes to riders, too.  Nothing wrong with that.
But a promotion titled "Cigarettes on the Bike Trail" would not promote biking
as well as, for example,  "Orange Juice on the Bike Trail".

Like cigarettes, bacon carries a lot of baggage.  When it's included in the
title of a biking event, it diminishes the public perception that biking is
healthy, environmentally friendly, and  benign.  Bacon is none of these.  The
links in my initial email message provide more information about this.

There are also servings of fruit, donuts, coffee, etc. You don’t have to eat
the bacon. I am a vegan and stop by every year to say hello and converse with
my cycling friends and also meet new people. Please don’t be judgmental of
others, we want others to be tolerant of us when we bike, so let’s start with
tolerance ourselves.   From: [email protected]

Subject: [Bikies] Bacon ... on the Bike Path?  Bacon on the Bike Path  This
title that pairs and promotes bacon with biking sends a conflicting message.
Biking supports health to humans and to the environment.  Bacon degrades both,
and is cruel besides, even on the so-called “heritage” farms and “humane”
slaughterhouses.  Much of the public knows this.  I’ve included some links
below for those who would like information.  Let’s sell biking, not bacon.
