While some may find the name of the event light, fun and humorous; to me it
carry's the baggage of slaughter houses, billions of gallons of wasted water
and our horribly degraded environment, in general. That's enough to make me
avoid the event, whether there are non-meat alternatives or not.

Charles;

Get a sense of humor, please. The alliterative pun: "bacon" as opposed to
"biking" on the path was probably the intent of the event. I applaud Planet
Bike for being clever with the name of the event. Not to mention that most
people are not opposed to being served meat for breakfast. I do not have a
problem eating sausage, bacon, steak or chicken for breakfast even though I
don't do that often nor in big quantities. Your health concerns are points
well taken and I usually don't eat bacon. However, I, for example, can't
stand bananas but that doesn't mean I should go around protesting the
harvesting of banana fruit because it upsets my construct of the world.

The point is whether one is eating fried meat, pastries, fruit, granola bars
and drinking water, juice and/or coffee is very much secondary to sharing,
or communing, if you will, in the common act of cycling. Personally, I think
maybe I ought to have cigar that day because cycling is not just about
physical fitness. Neither is it about sticking it to the gas man, the car
man, the highway man , the parking meter man, or the representatives bought
by the man. Cycling is cycling - an experience wholly separate from the each
item on the lists of good-deed-doers, but none-the-less contributes to the
better well-being to the citizenry as a whole; bacon or not.

BTW - bacon-wrapped donuts be declared an official Madison treat. Cheers, DJ

John, I should have been more clear that it's the *title* of the promotion,
"Bacon on the Bike Trail", that's the issue. You are right that we should
not be judgmental about people's food choices.

The sponsor could offer free smokes to riders, too. Nothing wrong with
that. But a promotion titled "Cigarettes on the Bike Trail" would not
promote biking as well as, for example, "Orange Juice on the Bike Trail".

Like cigarettes, bacon carries a lot of baggage. When it's included in the
title of a biking event, it diminishes the public perception that biking is
healthy, environmentally friendly, and benign. Bacon is none of these.
The links in my initial email message provide more information about this.

There are also servings of fruit, donuts, coffee, etc. You don't have to eat
the bacon. I am a vegan and stop by every year to say hello and converse
with my cycling friends and also meet new people. Please don't be judgmental
of others, we want others to be tolerant of us when we bike, so let's start
with tolerance ourselves.

Bacon on the Bike Path

This title that pairs and promotes bacon with biking sends a conflicting
message.

Biking supports health to humans and to the environment. Bacon degrades
both, and is cruel besides, even on the so-called "heritage" farms and
"humane" slaughterhouses.

Much of the public knows this. I've included some links below for those who
would like information.

Let's sell biking, not bacon.
