Its really too bad that there was no consideration of raising the new bridge to
the south that was done 3 summers ago high enough to move the whole crossing
under the bridge, ala Chicago lake front/lsdrive and others....and completely
agree on widening....and lengthening the time to cross at rush hour...its
really cool to be stuck in a rush hour crowd on a bike path! cycle safe y'all

For the laskeside approach, I'd like to see a signal improvement.
Right now, a pedestrian signal is the only signal that faces the lake, and it
isn't activated unless somebody presses the button.
Bikes have no problem crossing the John Nolen when the signal is green for
North Shore Drive, but we don't *see* the signal, which can create an
uncomfortable situation. I'd like to see a bike signal facing the lake, with
the same timing as the signal that faces North Shore Drive.

I would suggest that the approaches and crossings be widened to 12 feet. 10
feet seems like
an under-design especially when there are a large number of bikes crossing at
once.. Also
the lakeside approach should be improved at the same time.

For some reason I thought the redesign was going to include a single
bicycle/ped crossing
from North Shore/Nolen to Cap City path. This doesn't look to be the case based
on the
plans here. Anyone know if it's the case or not? My understanding is that all
outbound North
Shore traffic will be synched after the construction, but are we still going to
be expected to
pass through the (enlarged) island?

Good news. And for anyone curious about the details of the project, here is the

LANE CLOSURES ON
JOHN NOLEN DRIVE, NORTH SHORE DRIVE AND BROOM STREET
To improve the pedestrian/bike crossing at John Nolen-North Shore intersection
and to increase the safety for northbound left-turn drivers from John Nolen
Drive to
westbound North Shore Drive, the City and its contractors are currently
reconstructing part of the southbound John Nolen Drive between Broom Street and
North Shore Drive. The project includes reconstructing two traffic islands and
installing new median and new storm sewer in the area.
To facilitate the construction, the following lane closures or restrictions
will be
expected:
· Southbound John Nolen Drive at North Shore Drive: Two through
lanes and one right-turn lane will be maintained during afternoon peak hours
(3:30 – 5:30 PM). At least one through lane and one right-turn lane will be
maintained at all other times.
· Eastbound North Shore Drive at John Nolen Drive: One left-turn
lane
and one right-turn lane will be maintained at all times.
· Eastbound Broom Street at John Nolen Drive: One left-turn and two
right-turn lanes will be maintained at all times. However, during non-
afternoon peak hours, the left right-turn will be dedicated for John Nolen
traffic only and the right right-turn lane will be dedicated for North Shore
traffic only.
Pedestrian/bike crossings at John Nolen Drive will be maintained at all times.
The project is expected to last until end of August. Severe congestion is
expected
during peak traffic hours, and motorists are encouraged to use alternative
routes to
avoid delay during this project.
