True, but they're used to coordinating amongst themselves (aka "dumping it on
somebody else's budget"). Again, if you can find just the right person (BIG
if), I think you will find them very cooperative, and grateful for some
before-the-kvetching positive input. Some are even a tiny bit starved for
attention. ;)
Start by e-mailing somebody at supervisory level with the old "if this isn't
your responsibility, could you point me at the correct person or department?"
bit.

I think that's a good tact, but I think this might be little more complicated
due to it being a county highway and running through the city and town of
Madison. Maybe it's more straightforward than I'm imagining, but based on the
odd plowing patterns along this stretch, it seems like there are multiple
stakeholders involved and some need for coordination.

Grant, in my limited experience dealing with municipal services, a little
gentle prodding is all it takes. In my case it was getting parks prepped for
youth soccer. The folks responsible for such things usually get very little
input until something goes bad. The key is to find the right person, inform
them that this path will likely be getting a lot more use that it has, and ask
very nicely for it to be kept up regularly.

All they need is some assurance that if (when) somebody calls their supervisor
to find out why they're "wasting MY property tax sweeping that path that nobody
ever uses," they can cite specific requests from users.

I'm game. Would like some direction from anyone more familiar with the system
who has experience making something like this happen. I really don't have a
good understanding of how this sort of thing happens.

We shall need to work out a procedure for street sweeping the bike path between

That's an easier project than putting a bridge over the Beltline Highway.

Is there someone on this listserv that wants to take up this task and work with
Dane County?

You're correct. Path ends at the north end of the bridge right next to Culvers.
Plan is to continue alongside the rail lines, along the edge of the Arboretum
to Fish Hatchery and the city is still working on securing the agreements to
make this happen, as I understand it. I'm interested to know what the idea is
from there. The (much improved) bike lane on Fish Hatchery is still not
inviting and I can't imagine casual users feeling comfortable using it to get
downtown. It's consistently filled with debris (especially glass) and car
traffic moves at a steady 40 mph.

Using the wide sidewalk along the east side of the road might be an option for
some, but should really be widened and striped if this is the intent. It's used
heavily by pedestrians and students and doesn't really accommodate bike
through-traffic as it is right now.

Unless/until this is figured out, I doubt we'll capitalize on the promise of
this Southside/Downtown connection.

ok, so if you're going to the northeast from the southwest, you can pick up a
spur at the Cap City Trail which will take you to the bridge, then you take the
bridge and end up on the frontage road near ward brodt? i'm not complaining,
just clarifying, is there a trail from the northeast end of the bridge? if not,
when? and where will that trail take you to when it's done? thanks.

CANNONBALL PATH BRIDGE OVER BELTLINE OPENS!

The long-awaited Cannonball Path Phase 3 bridge over Beltline Highway, just
west of Fish Hatchery Road is open for use as of October 24. This new,
four-span arched bridge carries bicyclists
and pedestrians over the Beltline and both the north and south frontage roads,
providing a safe (and fun!) alternative to the Fish Hatchery Road interchange.
The bridge is also the key segment of the overall Cannonball Path project,
which consists of more
than four miles of paved shared-use (bicycle and pedestrian) path connecting
neighborhoods in Fitchburg and Madison south of the Beltline with central
Madison. Currently over 1.6 miles of path is paved, beginning at the Capital
City Trail in Fitchburg and
extending to the north Beltline frontage road. Contracts are in place and work
has begun on the remaining length, including a new bridge over McKee Road (CTH
PD). When completed next year the path will connect to the Military Ridge
State Trail, Capital City
Trail, Badger Trail and the Southwest path. Plans are being developed for the
northward extension to Fish Hatchery Road and ultimately to the Wingra Path.

Many have asked about a ribbon cutting. Nothing was planned for this year
because of the uncertainty about the opening date and the lateness of the
season. Next year we will be able to
hold a big celebration, encompassing the full length of the project and
recognizing the communities, governmental agencies, neighborhoods, citizens and
builders who have contributed to this great new addition to the metro area’s
bike and pedestrian network.
