I guess the bridge was in better shape than they thought, so it is taking
longer to take down....

p.s. I got caught too, so took the north side sidewalk to the East Campus Mall
Crossing.

I rode the eastbound bike lane yesterday without foreknowledge of the closing -
if it was on
this site I missed it. Did not see good detour signage. Glad to hear it's
almost done.

The project to demolish the pedestrian bridge over University Ave between
Vilas and
Humanities, which was supposed to be finished today, will continue through
at least
Monday 8/17/15. (Actually, this is another one of those projects that was
delayed
months while the state budget was being deliberated, but that´s another
rant).

There will not be any pedestrian (or eastbound bicycle) access on the south
side of
University Ave in the 800 block (by Vilas Hall).
The sidewalk on the north side of University Ave remains open, thankfully,
since the
Langdon St closure already means fewer ways for bikes and peds to get from
Park St
to Lake St right now. Please be careful out there.

Subject: 14H2Z: Univ Ave Bridge: Schedule

REVISED SCHEDULE ON THE PED BRIDGE REMOVAL

The last remaining section of bridge was scheduled for removal today but the
contractor has
changed that work to Monday 8/17. The final section of bridge is attached to
Vilas Hall so
the contractor wants to make additional provisions for protecting the building
during the
demolition which requires them to bring in different equipment and take more
time to stage
it. They didn´t have enough time yesterday to get the additional equipment on
site so they
needed to move the work to Monday.

The contractor will begin at 7 am Monday morning using a robotic pneumatic
breaker on the
bridge deck to separate the bridge from the Vilas Hall supporting wall. Then at
9 am they
will bring in a crane and remove the bridge deck - mostly intact - and lower it
to the ground.
Then the deck will be broken apart on the ground and hauled away. The noisiest
work will
likely be finished by early afternoon.

All traffic lanes will be opened on University Ave thru the weekend. The south
sidewalk
and bike lanes will be closed thru the weekend as equipment & rubble are still
taking up this
area.

The contractor will be working on restoring turf and sidewalk starting next
Tuesday.

I apologize for any problems this change creates to you work.
