In this case, only the lowest level of debugging shall reveal what is 
wrong. :-)

Connect to the server with telnet or openssl (the FAQ has info about
this), authenticate, then attach to the bincimapd process with "strace -s
128 -p <pid>". Have the output from strace redirected to a file, then
replicate the error condition manually with the commands you got from
recordio.

strace will show what Binc IMAP is trying to do.
