I will try to debug it later (can't do it just yet) and report back. By the way, I've used Mozilla client certificates with no problems at all talking to apache, so I suspect it might not be to blame.
As for "do I need it ?". Well, I suppose I don't NEED it, but it fits in well with my sense of paranoia; I've got client certs for apache, and qmail SMTP relay authorisation, so I figured I may as well have IMAP as secure as the rest.
