Indexing is the Art of replacing a big word with a small word, thereby
creating a short way of looking up something long, assuming that looking
up short stuff is faster than looking up long stuff.

For IMAP, it means creating a lookup table next to each mailbox with
pointers from individual words to documents in which they occur. With some
extra features, this gives a tremendous speed improvement when searching
mailboxes. Searching is used in the SEARCH command, but also in SORT and
THREAD. Indexing can also be used together with cacheing to improve the
speed of common lookups such as BODYSTRUCTURE.
