Sat.July 12-- If you have not been down to Cranberry Marsh in southwest Whitby lately it's worth your visit. For singing and sights go to the north platform---a small marshland is a welcome sight; today an inquisitive kidicking Virginia Rail came up to look at me on the platform, then had enough and went back into the Cattails. Out beyond there are the real thing--Bulrushes and Arrowheads in flower, which along with the Cattails harbour a variety of birds--Coot, Moorhen, Swamp Sparrow, Marsh Wren and on & on. The south platform is not so good---lots of Purple Loosestrife. But, then, venture down to the lakefront, and if you have the stamina go east beyond the control-gate--you will come upon an idyllic marsh--yes, there are some mosquitos, but the setting is gorgeous.
At the pond in front of the Victoria St. Sobey warehouse (to the west of the Iroquois Sports Arena)--Least Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, Bonaparte's Gulls, Caspian Tern, Killdeer Doug Lockrey, Whitby, ON "Doug Lockrey" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Visit http://www.ofo.ca/ontbirdsguide.htm for information on leaving and joining the list.
