Weekly report from the Cabot Head Research Station of the Bruce Peninsula Bird Observatory
(September 16th - September 22nd)

Also as anticipated as around Lake Erie, Hurricane Isable didn’t bring any special birds to our shore of Georgian Bay. It only closed the banding for a day. Before and after it, the banding was good, especially for Red-eyed Vireos, Black-capped Chickadees and Thrushes (Swainson’s and Gray-cheeked).

The diversity of warbler seems to be behind us, although we banded the first Orange-crowned Warbler of the fall on the 17th. The same day, the first White-crowned Sparrow was also banded.

Still, lots of Common Loons (up to one hundred) are seen daily on the Georgian Bay, along with a few Red-necked Grebes.

On the afternoon of the 22nd, an adult Bald Eagle was seen catching a juvenile Herring Gull on Wingfield Basin, and then eating it on the shore!

Cabot Head Research Station is located near Dyer’s Bay, on the Bruce Peninsula. Acces to the station is limited. Please contact us for a visit.
