Hello Ontbirders
Yesterday morning, October 7th, I birded the Shirley's Bay area.
There has been a big increase in diving ducks including Lesser Scaup,
Ring-necked Duck, Common Goldeneye and Hooded Merganser. Small flocks
were scattered along the riverside and west of the dyke. Water levels
continue to be high, with no shorebird habitat, but one American Golden
Plover flew over calling and one Spotted Sandpiper was feeding along the
edge of the shoreline. I had my second Snow Bunting of the season
observed flying over and calling (first one on Oct. 4th also at
Shirley's Bay). A few Surf Scoters and Red-necked Grebe were observed on
the water and on my return walk back to the boat launch area, I was
surprised to see a Black-billed Cuckoo. This is the first time I have
had a Snow Bunting and a Black-billed Cuckoo on the same day. Land
birding was good with lots of Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Winter
Wren, Hermit Thrush, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows.
Good Birding
Bruce
