OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - AUG 21 2004 AT 6:30 PM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The diversity of water birds continues to improve along the Ottawa
River.
Four species of herons were seen along the river today. A GREAT
EGRET has been present at Shirley's Bay since Aug. 18 and 2 Green
Herons were in Graham Creek in Andrew Haydon Park. Two Black-
crowned Night-Herons flew over Lakeside Gardens on the 19th and 1
juvenile was at Shirley's Bay today. Two Northern Shovelers and a
pair of Lesser Scaup were at the sand-bar at the east end of
Andrew Haydon Park (also known as "Ottawa Beach") on the 21st.
15 species of shorebirds have been reported from "Ottawa Beach"
through to Shirley's Bay since Aug. 18, with 13 species still
present at Shirley's on the morning of the 21st, including 2 adult
Black-bellied Plovers, 5 juvenile Baird's Sandpipers, 7 Pectoral
Sandpipers, and one Stilt Sandpiper. Numbers of Least and
Semipalmated Sandpipers, many juveniles as well as adults, have
increased daily at Shirley's Bay over the week. There was also a
high count of 16 Wilson's Snipes here on the 18th. Also of note
was a Whimbrel heard flying over Carlington Heights at 3:30 AM on
the 16th.
An immature Bald Eagle was seen at Shirley's Bay on the 19th and
an immature female Northern Goshawk cruised by the causeway at
Shirley's on the 21st. Also present here over the past few days
were a female Norther Harrier, an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk and a
juvenile Merlin. An adult male Merlin literally dropped in for a
drink at the bar (the sand-bar, that is) at "Ottawa Beach" on the
21st, and an immature Peregrine Falcon was reported from this
location on the 20th.
Bonaparte's Gulls continue to be seen in small numbers along the
Ottawa River, and a CASPIAN TERN was fishing east of the Britannia
filtration plant on the 18th.
A flock of 15 - 20 Gray Partridge were seen on the 18th along the
4th Line Rd. near Osgoode, between Dalmeny and Springhill Rds, and
a very vocal Carolina Wren was heard and seen from Aug. 15 - 18 on
Burland St. east of Andrew Haydon Park. Other land birds are
still few and far between, with only a handful of migrant warblers
reported so far. If you do happen to note any interesting migrant
songbirds, don't forget to call the Bird Status Line!
Thank you -- Good Birding!
