Migration Watchers-----for the past several days I've been
reading the Ontbird postings with great envy of those who
were seeing large #'s of Baird's Sandpipers. I'm lucky to
get 1 in the Spring or Fall ! Well, today, I got lucky. While
birding the lagoons with others, we were about to leave,
when a small flock----7 , to be exact-----of shorebirds flew
into the "sprinkler" cells ,by the main building. There they
were !!!!!!! --------7 juvenile Baird's sandpipers.
[ Thanks David Allen Sibley ! ]
There were a few other species-------all very skittish----due
to a recent regular Peregrine Falcon, making his temporary
home atop the high tower across from the lagoons.
The American Avocet is still present in Pond 5.
At the Erieau docks/lighthouse there are Sanderlings,
Semipalmated Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones----and probably
a dozen Caspian Terns. A good day !
