When the local forecast of "cold and rainy" weather morphed into a less
discouraging reality of "cool and grey", Mike Van den Tillaart and I decided to
ride over to the Cawthra-Mulock nature reserve in northwest Newmarket this
morning. Parking our mountain bikes, we hiked through the property from 9:00 -
11:00 and found some interesting birds. The best sighting was of a late
EASTERN MEADOWLARK in the fields north of the "square silo". In the same area
we had a male NORTHERN HARRIER crossing from east to west and a smallish raptor
winging determinedly away from us that left opened discussion about whether it
was an accipiter or a falcon. In the end we had to leave its status as
"unidentified raptor".

In the valley on the north side of the now-dry creek we added our first Tree
Sparrows (40+) of the season and a small flock of FOX SPARROWS (6). There were
a few juncos, numerous Golden-crowned Kinglets and at least 60 American Robins
there as well. Keith Dunn phoned me later in the day to report another small
flock of Fox Sparrows on the east side of Silver Lakes Golf Course in north
Holland Landing.

Directions: The CW Nature Reserve is just north of Green Lane in northwest
Newmarket, on the west side of Bathurst Street. It is not specifically public,
but rather a reserve intended for those who contribute to Ontario Nature, the
organization to whom this land was granted by the property owners.

Newmarket and Holland Landing are about halfway between Toronto and Barrie.
