This is Chris Lewis reporting. The prize this week was a very vocal male LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH discovered on May 2nd along the Waterfall Trail below the MacKenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park - it was still present this morning May 3rd. A GREAT EGRET is still faithful to the Rideau River opposite the Billings Bridge shopping centre as of today. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen yet again, flying into the large pond on the east side of Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on the evening of April 30th, and a single Snow Goose and a male Red- breasted Merganser were still present in this pond on the 30th as well. Two new Northern Mockingbird reports also came in - one on May 1st in an area of spruce trees between the Gloucester shopping centre parking lot and the OC Transpo bus transitway, and another on the 2nd at the corner of Old Montreal Rd. and Frank Kenny Rd. A group of 10 Wild Turkeys were at the corner of Old Montreal Rd. and Trim Rd. on April 27th, Virginia Rails were located at Petrie Island on the 27th and in the Constance Creek marsh on the 30th. More shorebird arrivals in various locations this week included Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper and Dunlin, and pairs of Upland Sandpiper were reported from Wall Rd. at the "S"-curve west of Trim Rd. north of Navan on the 2nd, and also on Murphy Side Rd. near 2nd Line Rd. in Dunrobin on the 3rd. Two Barred Owls and a Northern Saw-whet Owl were found in the Munster area on the night of the 30th, another Barred Owl was at the LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH location on the 3rd, the 1st local Whip-poor-will was reported from Clarence-Cambridge Rd. northeast of Limoges on the evening of the 1st, and 2 adult Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen again at the old burn site along Whistler St. in Constance Bay on May 1st. A couple of reports of recent visits to Gatineau Park indicated that this continues to be a great location to see and hear birds on breeding territory, including Broad-winged Hawk, Ruffed Grouse, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren and several species of warblers. Other new arrivals this week included Chimney Swift, Warbling Vireo and Baltimore Oriole at the Britannia Conservation Area on the 2nd, an early Eastern Kingbird at the Marais aux Grenouillettes west of Masson, Quebec, the same day, and a very early Swainson's Thrush at Britannia on April 30th. The 1st reports of Nashville, Yellow, Black-throated Green, Black-and- white Warbler, Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush also came in this week, mainly from Britannia and Gatineau Park, and the 1st White- crowned Sparrows were noted on the 2nd at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden.
