I believe they nest there, as they are there night and day and in the same spot. I swear one gave me a dirty look :) To get there, take the QEW to Ontario Street. Turn right onto Ontario Street, take to Welland Avenue. Turn right onto Welland Avenue, and immediately there is kind of a side road leading down towards the creek/under the overpass. (It's kind of a fork on your right hand side). Take this road down. You will see the bridge...there is a little parking lot (at least I use it as such) at the top of the street where it dead-ends. You'll need to walk back to the trail from here...go back towards the bridge. You want to take the trail to your left by the fence just before the bridge. The herons hang out on the far side of the creek from this side of the trail (but I find you get a better view on the opposite side) and can regularly be seen just after the fence ends on the opposite side, and further along the creek as you go. They like sitting in all the trees there. This was an amazing experience and I managed to capture a few photos of these amazing birds as well as some others (Wood Duck mama and her babies). If you are interested in the photos click on this link (it is part of my blog) http://kadacat.typepad.com/photos/favourite_photos/index.html. For instructions on how to get to Fletcher Wildlife Garden, click on this link http://www.ofnc.ca/fletcher/location.php Directions to Britannia Conservation Area: Take Pinecrest Road (exit 129) off the Hwy 417. Go north on Pinecrest, then turn right (east) onto Richmond Road. After Richmond crosses Carling Avenue, turn left (north) onto Poulin Avenue. Poulin intersects with Britannia Road. Turning right onto Britannia will take you to Cassels Street. Park anywhere along Cassels. Mud Lake is to the right of the road and is where the Heron was spotted.
