AVICULTURE/FIELD INTERNS needed for Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Project in Ontario, Canada. INTERNS will assist with wild population monitoring, captive breeding (in large field aviaries), and release of young at the Carden Plain and Dyer's Bay sites. Captive breeding and release tasks include husbandry of pairs and their offspring such as diet preparation and maintenance (live food), daily behavioral observations of all birds in the field enclosures, soft-release of young, and monitoring and supplemental feeding of young once released. Primary tasks for wild population monitoring may include habitat assessment, surveying for wild pairs, and collection of breeding information i.e. nest searching and monitoring of nesting attempts. Applicant should have prior experience with animal care/husbandry, be able to work independently, be willing to work long hours in the field and live in rustic field quarters. People skills are a must - most Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes breed on private lands, so considerable landowner contact is required. Field experience a plus. An undergraduate degree is preferred, but not required, as is prior experience handling endangered birds. BIOLOGIST needed for Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Project in Ontario, Canada. Main responsibilities will include carrying out wild population monitoring, husbandry of captive-bred pairs (in large field aviaries), and soft-release of young. Biologist will be responsible for supervising 2 interns who will be assisting with duties. Wild population monitoring tasks include habitat assessment, surveying for wild pairs, collection of nesting and productivity data, initiating and maintaining landowner contacts, and liaising with local NGO partners on habitat stewardship activities. Captive breeding and release tasks include husbandry of pairs and their offspring such as diet preparation and maintenance (live food), daily behavioural observations of all birds in the field enclosures, soft-release of young, and monitoring and supplemental feeding of young once released. People skills are a must - most Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes breed on private lands, so considerable landowner contact is required. Experience with bird monitoring/surveying (recognition by sight and sound preferred), bird handling and animal care/husbandry required. Prior experience with banding and captive breeding (of endangered species and/or birds) would be an asset, as would the ability to navigate in the field using a map, compass, and GPS. Applicant must be self-motivated, able to work independently and in teams, have experience supervising others (preferred), and be willing to work long hours in the field and live in a small isolated rustic cabin on-site with interns. An undergraduate degree is preferred. Applicant should have a valid driver's license, and access to a vehicle for the duration of the contract is preferable, but not required.
