THE OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE @ 5:00 pm, MONDAY DEC. 31, 2007

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

In the last week of the year Ottawa was blessed with mild temperatures and
several "quality" birds! A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE discovered back on Dec.
21st in the Parkwood Hills neighbourhood was re-found on the 28th and was
still present on the 31st on Millbrook Cres. off Deer Park Rd. The TUFTED
TITMOUSE on Manitou St. in Forest Park, Embrun was still here on the 31st,
and the female HARLEQUIN DUCK remains on the Ottawa River at the north
end of the Champlain bridge as of the 29th. With respect to the solitaire and the
titmouse - there is no need to enter private property, as both birds have
been easily seen from the road, however please be respectful of these quiet
residential neighbourhoods.

Other waterfowl seen this week included 6 Canada Geese in a field along
Barnsdale Rd. on the 31st, and from Bate Island a male Ring-necked Duck, a
couple of female Long-tailed Ducks, a male Bufflehead, a male Barrow's
Goldeneye and 2 male Common Mergansers on the 28th. An unusual sight
at the Hilda Rd. feeders by Shirley's Bay from the 27th to the 31st was a
Ruffed Grouse among the more common customers, and a HOARY REDPOLL
has been seen regularly at these feeders since the 28th. Two GRAY PARTRIDGE
were in a field with a manure spread between Akins Rd. and Brownlee Rd. along
with small numbers of Horned Larks & Snow Buntings and 2 Lapland Longspurs.
Wild Turkeys were found in at least six different locations in the Kanata and West
Carleton areas since the 22nd. Two juvenile Bald Eagles were in the
Eardley-Masham area of Gatineau Park on the 22nd and an adult was seen along
March Valley Rd. on the 30th, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was still present
along Old Carp Rd. near Gourlay Lane west of Huntmar Rd. as of the 28th, a male American Kestrel was seen hunting at Fallowfield Rd. and Prince of Wales Dr. and
on Eagleson at Bankfield Rds., and a Cooper's Hawk and a Merlin took advantage
of the birdy smorgasbord at the Hilda Rd. feeders on the weekend as well.
Numbers of gulls increased again with the milder weather, and the gathering on the river off Bate Island included several Iceland and Glaucous Gulls and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull on the 28th. Barred Owls were reported almost every day this
week, with individuals seen on Old Carp Rd., 6th Line Rd. and March Valley Rd.

Four separate reports of Northern Shrikes came in over the past week. A
very late Hermit Thrush was found in the Rockcliffe area on the 29th on Pond
St. near the entrance to the Caldwell-Carver Conservation Area, the Gray
Catbird on Goodin St. in Constance Bay was still alive and well as of at least
the 24th, and it was another good week for Bohemian Waxwings, Pine
Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks in many locations.

Thank you - Good Birding, and HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
