Today between 9-10 AM, Brett Fried and I had the 6 Avocets at West Perth
Wetlands. They were alternating between the first cell as well as a smaller
cell farther south.
Surprisingly enough, the area was excellent for shorebirds and we totaled:
6 American Avocet
2 White-rumped Sandpiper
1 Long-billed Dowitcher
30+ Dunlin
3 Least Sandpiper
2 Semipalmated Plover
1 Black-bellied Plover
many Killdeer
1 Wilson's Snipe
small numbers of both Yellowlegs
2 Pectoral Sandpiper
Amongst all the Mallards were good numbers of Green-winged Teal. A few Ringneck
Ducks were in the first cell as well. Possibly other species but we didn't scan
them thoroughly.
Directions (taken from Steve Thorpe's directions)
West Perth Wetlands are in Mitchell. From Ontario Street (Hwy 8) travel south
on Wellington Street to Frank Street. Cross the road and drive beside the ball
field to the parking lot. PS: There is a lot of construction activity at WPWL
but the first and the far cells are accessible.
Good birding,
Josh Vandermeulen
