There was a Tricolored Heron near the Echo Bay Lake Street viewing platform at 7:45 am today, Friday April 21. The bird was on the edge of the open water immediately north of the platform. It moved in fits and starts eastward about 200 meters before disappearing; we searched for about 30 minutes but were unable to relocate the bird. Don returned at 11 am, no heron to be seen. We will check the area a few more times over the next few days and post results only if we are successful in relocating the Tricolored Heron.
The village of Echo Bay is 24 km east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. If approaching from the south or east on Hwy. 17, turn left on Hwy. 638 (Church Street) toward the village of Echo Bay. In the center of the village (just before the railroad tracks) turn right on Lake Street. The viewing platform is straight ahead. Parking is limited and neighbours are concerned about congestion; it is best to park at the ball field and walk north to the platform.
