Weather: A simply beautiful day with few clouds and temperatures in the low 70s. Wind was moderate out of the north west at an average of 10mph, but gusts reached as high as 22mph. Haze made finding birds over Canada tough, but the visibility improved as the day progressed. Raptor Observations: Incredibly and unseasonably quiet; Only 526 migrant raptors counted of 8 species. With such a great day weather wise, it's hard to determine why the birds weren't up. Turkey Vultures dropped to a mere 398, with a flight time of 11am-3:30pm. I'm hoping this is a sign of my theory on where these early Turkey Vultures are coming from. Sharp-shinned Hawks seemed to be the only consistent bird with 85 counted. Non-raptor Observations: The first White-crowned Sparrow flocks have begun to mix with the other sparrows. 8 all female Northern Shovelers where present around the count site, also first for the season. A young Trumpeter Swan flew by and headed out to Lake Erie. Predictions: Continuation of today's weather, with less clouds, and warmer temperatures. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
