The past week presented a mixed bag of weather and a nice mix of birds, including a 1st-winter LAUGHING GULL at Petrie Island on the afternoon of Oct. 5th.

Fall waterfowl migration has yet to hit its stride, however a few more SNOW GEESE have begun to appear in agricultural areas, and variety and numbers of ducks are increasing with more AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK and LESSER SCAUP reported. Both GREATER and LESSER SCAUP were noted on the large quarry pond on Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. on the 2nd, and the first seasonal report of a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER on the Ottawa River off Andrew Haydon Park also came in on the 2nd. The same day, a couple of COMMON LOONS were spotted off Andrew Haydon, and a RED-NECKED GREBE was on the Moodie Dr. pond.

GREAT EGRETS continue to be seen around the area - while no outstanding numbers have recently been reported, single birds were seen in several locations from the 30th to the 2nd, and 4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were noted at Britannia on the 29th. Also on the 29th, 8 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in a traditional fall gathering site - the fields at Milton and Smith Rds. southwest of Navan. The only recent shorebird reports were of a small number of LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER at the Richmond lagoons off Eagleson Rd. on the 2nd.

From the 29th to the 2nd, passerines in the Britannia Conservation Area
included multiple BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, SWAINSON'S, GRAY-CHEEKED and HERMIT THRUSHES. Many AMERICAN PIPITS were again noted in rural areas, and warblers over the past week included ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, NORTHERN PARULA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, PINE, PALM and BLACKPOLL. Substantial numbers of CHIPPING, WHITE-THROATED and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and DARK-EYED JUNCOS were found in many locations, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW was noted at Britannia on the 2nd, and the first FOX SPARROWS have begun to arrive, right on time, with individuals reported from the west end of Ottawa as well as in Carleton Place from the 4th to the 6th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
