Weather: We were in a doldrum today with almost solid cloud cover and just a few peeks of sun. The temp got to a high of 11C. What wind there was came from the SW and remained light for the day. Raptor Observations: With the lack of wind and poor migration conditions, the flight was just 76 birds...certainly a far cry from the large push of birds over the past 3 days. Most of today's flight was Redtails (49) with a few Shoulders (5). A lone Goshawk was the highlight for today. Non-raptor Observations: We had a few periods of almost sun this morning and early this afternoon, during which several non-raptor species were particularly busy. Right along the cliff, several DOWNY WOODPECKERS were spotted foraging in the weeds along with many CHICKADEES, GOLDFINCH, & CARDINALS. Singles of TUFTED TITMOUSE and CAROLINA WREN were heard and seen in the same area, and a PILEATED WOODPECKER put in a nice appearance for some visitors about mid-morning. In the beanfield on the east side of Hawk Cliff Rd, a mob of mixed BLACKBIRDS including RED-WINGED & RUSTY plus STARLINGS foraged, providing frequent aerial displays. Two white-tailed deer near Sharpie Alley provided today's best highlight. Predictions: Thursday looks like a washout out with rain forecast for the day. Friday may prove interesting with the much colder air pushing in behind the low pressure system ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
