Weather: Partly cloudy and cold with WSW winds 20-22 km/hr subsiding to 14-16 km/hr in the afternoon with a high of 5C. Raptor Observations: A small flight of Red-tails, along with singles of Turkey Vulture, Harrier, Red-shouldered, and Cooper's Hawk. In addition to the local pair of ad. Bald Eagles and 2 local juvs., a stunning "white extreme" (see Hawks in Flight for an illustration) 3rd-yr. Bald Eagle and a near-ad. also put in appearances out over the marsh. The day's highlight was 3 Golden Eagles (2 juv., 1 subad.), with the first juv. actively hunting the huge flock of Mallards at the distant west end of the marsh before flying behind the trees to the SW. Nice looks were also had the subadult Golden in the afternoon as it briefly tasseled with and soared alongside the white 3rd-yr. Bald Eagle before continuing to the west. Non-raptor Observations: A few passerines were on the move, including 43 Horned Larks, 43 Am. Goldfinches, and 26 Pine Siskins. Also seen were several flocks of Tundra Swans flying-over and/or resting out in the marsh. Predictions: Mostly sunny and cold with light SW winds and a high of 4C. Should be a few raptors on the move with the clear skies and light winds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
