Please read the email below. Hamlin Beach is about 60 miles east of the
Niagara River on Lake Ontario. At 11:40 a.m., about 2.5 hours after Andy
Guthrie had this bird fly by at Hamlin Beach heading west, I had poor views
at what seemed to be a small cormorant among 25-30 Double-crested Cormorants
flying west in front of our home. We live about 15 miles east of the
Niagara River on Lake Ontario. Without better views, I cannot say whether
or not I saw the Neotropic Cormorant but it seems likely. If these birds
continued west, they would be in Ontario by now. Places to look would be
where cormorants tend to gather, such as Port Weller and Hamilton.
Good birding!

Subject: [GeneseeBirds-L] NEOTROPIC CORMORANT - Hamlin Beach
This morning I photographed a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT flying west at Hamlin
Beach. It was with about 25 Double-crested Cormorants (DCCO) and I got
several photographs with DCCOs for comparison. The Neotropic immediately
looked smaller and longer-tailed, and these points are apparent in the
photos as well as the more limited, sharply-angled gular patch coming to a
point at the rear; smaller bill; dark lores; and hint of white feathering at
the rear of the facial skin.
Unedited photographs are posted here:

This would be a first state record pending NYSARC acceptance.
Thanks to Marshall Iliff, Willie D'Anna and Jim Pawlicki for comments on the
ID.
Cheers,
Andy Guthrie
