Birders:

Somewhat surprisingly, the three Marbled Godwits reported by Blake Mann last
Saturday, but which were not seen on Sunday, are again on the mudflat just
north of the lakeside parking lot at Mitchell's Bay. It looked especially odd
to see them given the snowy and blustery conditions of the last 24 hours, and
with snow and ice in the background. Yet the water and mud was not frozen and
the godwits were busily feeding, apparently successfully. Other shorebirds
included a more typical group of Dunlin. Also, there were three Great Egrets
present on Sunday, along the marsh edge still farther to the north, but not
visible today.

Directions: from Chatham, take Hwy 40 north towards Wallaceburg. After about 12
km turn left (west) onto Electric Line (C-K Rd 42). At the intersection with
Bear Line, jog left (south) for a short distance, and then right (west) onto
Bay Line. Follow Bay Line through Mitchell's Bay to the parking lot at the
water's edge. From the north end of the parking lot, look north to some red and
green channel markers. A small mudflat occurs just to the north of the channel,
and the birds are found in that vicinity of the mudflat. A scope is highly
recommended.
