The 8th Alfred-Montebello CBC was held December 26th. A light snow fell
all day, at times limiting long distance visibility. Few open areas were
found on the Ottawa and Nation Rivers.
The 13 field observers and 3 feeder watchers counted 34 species and 2821
individual birds.
This is lower than our 8-year average of 40 species and 4495 of total
individuals.
White-throated Sparrow was new to the count bringing the all-time species
list to 66.
A few record highs were noted but in particular Snowy Owl 10 (2 in 2008)
all found south of Lefaivre.
Other New Highs:
Ruffed Grouse 6 ( previous high 5 in 2010)
Hairy Woodpecker 36 (previous high 33 in 2012)
Blue Jay 289 (previous 216 in 2011)
Interesting species: Gray Partridge 5, American Robin 2 (2nd record), and
Lapland Longspur 1.
Thanks to all the counters who participated this year.
Christine Brunet
